At Cornerstone Speech Therapy, we celebrate every success, no matter how big or small. Here is a wonderful story from speech-language pathologist Stephanie Oswald, describing a recent success she experienced with a client:
“I have a 6 year old with autism that I have been working on social skills with. He was having a hard time talking about what other’s were talking about or engaging with other family members because he would perseverate on what he wanted to do or what he wanted to talk about. One day we had a lesson on “changing your plan”. We used the following visual cue to help him learn that he needed to change the plan on his head by taking the old plan off his head and putting on the new plan. Mom reports that this has been such a wonderful tool in their everyday life but was especially useful last week when they were on vacation at the beach with their cousins. He had a difficult time engaging with his cousins but mom was able to use the script of changing the plan from his “old plan” to a “new plan” to help him work on playing what his cousins wanted but he also worked on asking his cousins to change their plan so they could all play together.”
What a great story, Stephanie, and thank you for sharing! For more information on how Cornerstone Speech Therapy can help your family celebrate your own successes, contact us at (614) 973-9755, firstname.lastname@example.org, or www.cornerstonespeechtherapy.com today!
